Kayla Reopelle and Joey Shultz, theatre students at Bethel High School, recently auditioned for universities located across the United States in recruitment and scholarship auditions. These events are sponsored by The International Theatre Educators Association. Kayla’s audition was held at the International Theatre Association Festival, held in Lincoln, Nebraska, June 2009, and Joey’s audition was held in Seattle, weekend of October 10. The purpose of these EDTA events are to insure that the talented students in our state are visible to recruitment professors from university theatre departments in many locations.
Both students meticulously prepared audition monologues and songs taken from play scripts and musical comedy scripts for their auditions. They constructed a 5-minute timed audition. They both submitted their grade point average and had theatre educator and a counselor’s signature to enter. Both students were recognized as exemplary theatre students and received many call backs from several auditors. Kayla performed for 37 universities and was called back by 30 schools. She obtained the largest number of callbacks at the International Testival.
Joey’s audition day was viewed by 14 universities, whose theatre department staff and auditors traveled to Seattle for the event. Out of the 14 schools represented, Joey received 10 callbacks. Both students are looking forward to next year, but have not made a choice of schools. They were pleased and happy with their outcomes and the possible choices they now have for the coming fall.
